Norton Saved My Bacon

Too much “tidying up” !

15 August 2009

I have three external HDDs. I recently wanted to “tidy up” my computer and as a safety I copied all my docs and pics to one of them. Unfortunately the HDD started to behave “strange” during the copy-phase. As a result I could not access my files at all!!! Digital photos six years back was lost among Email etc. Fortunately I run Norton Ghost since this winter. The partial restoration saved me and a lot of data!

Leave it to “Honey”!

9 August 2009

My husband (who can be very frugal) felt that the “free” McAfee virus software he had was adequate. Unfortunately, he got a virus. Even though he is a chemist and actually worked as a chemical engineer for a semiconductor company years ago, his current PC experience is pretty much limited to reading email, composing documents in Word, and modifying “canned” PowerPoint presentations to teach his college biology class. Even though he didn’t even have Norton on his computer, because I did on mine, they spent several hours (for which they charged, entirely appropriately) salvaging the data on his old computer. Unfortunately, the virus had done so much damage that a complete re-install would have been required – so I told him the price of MY several hours of assistance was that he ditch his old desktop and take my newer, faster, more state-of-the-art laptop. I then reinstalled everything on that machine, and he is now happily back to working with the computer (and calling “honey” when something doesn’t go quite right). Needless to say, we have Norton 360 protecting both of our computers and would never consider anything else.

The N360 Battle

7 August 2009

Who knows how many times 360 has thwarted attacks? 360 does its job without a lot of fanfare. I have noticed attacks in progress and watched, panic stricken as the screen showed the ongoing battle ensuing right before my eyes– And then it was over –Enemy vanquished an on to normal computing. It was like, wow! what just happened? 360 did its job…..

Rock Solid

7 August 2009

Well how to start, I suppose when I first started to use Norton would be as good a place as any. I had Norton Anti Virus installed on my machine, and it proved to be quite effective up to a point, and when I saw Norton 360 was available I upgraded. First impressions and experiences were not good, and I did have a few problems, one of which was a virus attack that slipped through the net and I was not happy about having to pay extra for removal support after purchasing the product. Of course that is all water under the bridge and vast improvements have been made and I am now using Version 3 which is as reliable as you can get. It really does do a good job of protecting my machine, which is a rather large 2 Xeon twin core cpu SCSI Raid server with at last count 10 drives with another 8 available if needed, a lot for just emails. Anyway back to Norton, gone are the days of your machine stopping when Norton is running and, as I have said an excellent program that is rock solid, that has and does save me from what seems to be constant attacks on many occasions, the only down side, in my case, is the time involved in doing a full system scan, which takes the best part of a day, but saying that I do have a large system. To finish off Yes I will renew my license, and yes I do recommend it. Many thanks Norton Symantec and their online support technicians. Great team.

Clearing Up the Mess

6 August 2009

Gradually, my PC was grinding to a halt and was doing some funny things with my start page and browser. After many hours of searching and trying alternate scans(free) from other places [pc wouldn't allow anything Symantec], I tried the help menu at the Symantec site. Yes, I had a nasty virus , but there was a tutorial and appropriate tool that cleared up the mess. Thanks Norton!
